"Thank you for doing such a great job with this half and 5k. It is a wonderful cause. I look forward to next year and many more to come. Thank you again. PS. Love the shirts and finisher medal!!"

"I loved this race so much, it encouraged me to keep running, despite my age and health condition. I especially was touched by the man who kicked off the race this morning. I have a sister who was born with Cerebral Palsy, not the same as Autism, but I have very tender feelings, great love and respect for those special souls among us. That man brought tears to my eyes (luckily I had my sunglasses on). Thank you for organizing this meaningful race for such a noble cause. May the Lord bless you!"

training

To be prepared for race day, and to have a wonderful experience, you need a training schedule!  Follow the links below for information on proper training schedules.

If you have any questions, feel free to ask them on our Facebook page, or send us an email at info@utahrunnergirls.com. Also, don't miss our training tips from Coach Amy and Coach Shaun:

Training for long distance is stressful enough on the body, when you end up pushing your training through a heat wave you can alter your performance, slow your recovery rates and set you up for a less than optimal training season.

Mid-summer is when most long distance runners are approaching their high mileage and intense training weeks. This is a time to train smart. Work with the heat, recover efficiently, and stay on track with the training program.

Here are three ways to modify your running routine so you can stay on track and train safely through an extreme heat wave:

Take your workouts indoors - I can hear the moaning and groaning from here...NOT THE DREADMILL! But would any of you even think twice about getting on that machine if it were a blizzard outside? If you run your interval, tempo or even your easy runs at 70 degree weather indoors you'll achieve a higher quality workout, you will be able to be effective in your training program without overexerting yourself unnecessarily....and your body will thank you for that come time for your long run.

Cross-Train and Cut back - If the heat is only expected to last a short period of time (week or so) modify your training week and make it a cut back week in mileage and intensity.  Don't shy away from cross training activities like cycling to keep your cardio base up, keeping your efforts moderate to easy. This works especially well for those that have a longer period of time before their race and have extra weeks to play with.

Train like those over-achieving women that seem to get it all in everyday - Get up and get in your long runs in by 5:00am...particularly hard for me but when I do it...WORTH EVERY MINUTE! This gives you plenty of time to get your longs run in during the coolest part of the day.  For those that suffer in the heat even after they adapt consider doing the longer run training in the cooler months and using the hot months to train for your best 5k or 10K...Cooler months for the marathons and halfs.

Last of all....HYDRATE! Never will you feel worse if you get dehydrated. Water...water...and more water.

cause

Utah Runner Girls Half Marathon and 5K will be donating a portion of proceeds to the Eaton Alliance Foundation. We are so excited and thrilled to be able to run for Autism, and donate money to this great charity.

Eaton Alliance is dedicated to change the future for all that struggle with Autism Spectrum Disorders. An estimated 1 out of 70 boys is diagnosed on the Autism Spectrum nationally, and in Utah that number is even higher. Many Utah families are impacted by Autism; these families need all the support and help they can get and we are happy and honored to raise money for this cause!

Eaton Alliance is a human service provider, founded in 2004. They serve people with Autism and other intellectual disabilities, using several different programs based on the needs of the individual and their families. Such programs include assistance in group homes, independent living situations, family supports, and a summer program. Eaton Alliance Foundation is excited to announce our newest program, Kids' Night Out, which they plan to have in place by the end of 2012.

From Eaton Alliance Foundation:
"Kids' Night Out is a monthly activity designed to provide a fun and safe environment for individuals with disabilities. Our goal is to provide a fun activity with proper staffing at an affordable rate to allow parents a much needed, worry-free Date Night.  For every $30 we receive, we will be able to sponsor one child at our Kids' Night Out program."

For families with Autism children, we know that getting out and enjoying some MOM TIME OUT is not that easy and can be nearly impossible. Eaton Alliance' Kid's Night Out will be able to provide that for those families in need.

volunteer

The key to an amazing race are great volunteers! They are absolutely essential to make your race a success.  We are looking to build our volunteer team with individuals that are willing to give time, encouragement, and support our runners along the way and on race day! And what do you get in return you ask? An awesome volunteer T-shirt, necklace, swag bag, and post race food at the finishline! Oh..and the most important thing...the satisfaction of helping those awesome gals accomplish their goal! Priceless:)

We also LOVE cheer groups, dance groups, sports teams, and scouts as volunteers! If your group is looking for some service, we would love to have you!
